Why we started Cold Fusion: 21 Winters of Solo Ski and Snowboard Holidays!

It started with a simple idea: skiing is better together.

When Nicky and I set up Cold Fusion Chalets back in 2005, we didn’t want to create just another chalet company.

There were already plenty of those.

Chalet holidays generally followed the same formula: find a nice property, fill the bedrooms, provide breakfast and dinner and send everyone off skiing.

But we felt there was something missing.

Nobody was really catering for people travelling alone.

There were countless skiers and snowboarders who loved the mountains but didn’t necessarily have friends who could travel at the same time, had partners who didn’t ski, or simply wanted to meet new people.

At the time, there really wasn’t anyone offering a dedicated solo ski and snowboard chalet holiday.

We saw a niche — and decided to fill it.

A premium ski holiday designed for solo travellers

One of the biggest reasons we created Cold Fusion was that we felt solo travellers deserved something better.

We wanted to create holidays particularly suited to single professionals in their 30s, 40s and 50s who wanted to travel independently but didn’t want to compromise on the quality of their holiday simply because they were travelling alone.

Back then, travelling solo often meant choosing cheaper accommodation, staying in a hostel or paying a huge supplement for your own room.

We thought there should be another option - and Cold Fusion Chalets was born....

Why shouldn’t a solo traveller be able to stay in a beautiful chalet, eat fantastic food, drink great wine and enjoy a premium ski holiday without having to rent an entire chalet or pay for a whole bedroom?

Our idea was to bring like-minded solo travellers together so they could share the cost and, more importantly, share the experience.

You could book a place in a beautiful chalet, share a twin bedroom with another carefully matched solo guest if you wanted to, sit around a big dinner table with a fantastic group and have all the benefits of a premium chalet holiday.

It was luxury without the loneliness — and without having to pay for an entire chalet yourself.

We wanted to be different

From day one, we didn’t want Cold Fusion to become another chalet company offering the same old thing.

We wanted to create holidays where the chalet, food and skiing were fantastic, but the people and the experience were what guests remembered most.

Over the past two decades, Cold Fusion has operated more than 40 ski chalets across numerous resorts throughout the French and Italian Alps.

We’ve always made a huge effort to find properties with character: stylish, comfortable and, importantly, large enough to create a fantastic social atmosphere.

Big dining tables. Comfortable lounges. Fires to gather around. Bars, games rooms, saunas and spaces where everyone can relax together after skiing.

Because when you’re travelling solo, the right chalet and the right group of people can completely transform your holiday.

It’s about much more than providing a bed

Something we’ve always believed strongly is that a great ski holiday shouldn’t just be about providing accommodation and leaving you to work everything else out yourself.

Our local knowledge and our Cold Fusion team are a huge part of the experience.

We want our guests to be able to switch off, relax and simply enjoy their holiday.

That means helping you make the most of every day on the mountain.

We’re incredibly proud of the local knowledge we’ve built up over more than 20 years in the Alps.

We know where to ski and, just as importantly, when to ski there.

If conditions are fantastic somewhere, we want our guests there.

If fresh snow has fallen overnight, we’ll aim to get you up for the first lifts and give you the best chance of finding those fresh tracks.

At the end of the ski day, rather than worrying about buses or working out where to go, you can be collected and taken to some of our favourite après-ski spots.

We want our guests enjoying the places the locals love rather than simply ending up in the nearest tourist trap.

Ski beyond just one resort

Being based in an incredible part of the Alps also gives us the opportunity to make the holiday much more varied.

One of the highlights of our Chamonix holidays, for example, can be travelling through the Mont Blanc Tunnel for an amazing ski-away day in Courmayeur, Italy.

Different mountains. Different food. Different atmosphere.

And then back to the chalet at the end of the day.

It’s these experiences that can be difficult to organise when you’re travelling alone — but become incredibly easy when they’re part of a hosted Cold Fusion holiday.

Our team is there to provide the local knowledge, organisation and social side of the experience, leaving you free to concentrate on one thing:

Having a brilliant ski or snowboard holiday.

Arrive solo. Leave as friends.

This has become the heart of Cold Fusion.

You might arrive knowing absolutely nobody.

A few hours later, you’re sharing a bottle of wine over dinner.

The following morning, you’re skiing or snowboarding together.

By the end of the week, you’re swapping numbers, sharing photographs and planning your next trip.

And some of those friendships last for decades.

We have guests who have been travelling with us almost since the beginning — returning year after year for nearly 20 years.

We’ve watched friendships form, relationships begin and groups of people who originally met as complete strangers through Cold Fusion go on to travel and ski together around the world.

For Nicky and me, that’s probably the part we’re proudest of.

Great food, great wine and an amazing team

Creating that atmosphere doesn’t happen by accident.

We’ve always put enormous care and attention into every part of a Cold Fusion holiday.

We’ve spent years developing and refining our menus, catering for all kinds of dietary requirements and using fresh, local produce wherever possible.

We’ve sourced fantastic wines and local beers because we know that sitting around a big chalet table after an incredible day on the mountain can be every bit as memorable as the skiing itself.

And we’ve always been incredibly particular about our team.

A Cold Fusion chef or host isn’t simply there to cook dinner or serve breakfast.

They’re part of the experience.

We look for people with personality — people who genuinely enjoy interacting with guests, bringing a group together and making somebody who’s arrived alone feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door.

That welcoming, inclusive atmosphere has been part of Cold Fusion from the very beginning.

Our guests aren’t numbers

As we’ve grown, there’s one thing we’ve always tried incredibly hard never to lose: personal service.

You’re not simply a booking reference.

We get to know our guests.

We know what they like to ski, where they’ve stayed with us before, who they enjoyed skiing with and often where we’re likely to find them at après!

Many guests have travelled with us so many times that they’ve become genuine friends.

Because ultimately, people remember people.

They remember laughing around the dinner table.

They remember being on the first lift after an overnight dump of snow.

They remember the incredible day skiing in Italy.

They remember the après session that went on slightly longer than planned.

And they remember arriving alone and leaving with a completely new group of friends.

More than 40 chalets — and we’re still evolving

Over more than two decades, Cold Fusion has operated over 40 different ski chalets across the French and Italian Alps, giving us an incredible amount of experience in understanding what makes a great chalet and, more importantly, what makes a great solo ski holiday.

Today, we’re concentrating on some of the Alps’ most exciting high-altitude and snow-sure destinations, including:

Chamonix • Les Houches • Serre Chevalier • Val Thorens

And we’re not stopping there.

We have new resorts coming soon, as we continue looking for exciting destinations and fantastic properties that fit the Cold Fusion experience.

Our 21st winter — and we’re only getting started

We’re incredibly excited to be heading into the 21st winter season of Cold Fusion ski and snowboard holidays.

What started in 2005 as an idea to do something different has grown into a community of solo skiers and snowboarders who return year after year.

Yet our aim remains exactly the same:

To offer the best solo ski and snowboard holiday experience possible.

Beautiful chalets. Fantastic skiing. Great food and wine. Amazing teams. Local knowledge. Brilliant company. And a welcoming social atmosphere where travelling on your own doesn’t mean spending your holiday alone.

And next summer, Cold Fusion is heading into the mountains too…

We’re also excited to be taking the Cold Fusion social holiday experience beyond winter.

For summer 2027, we’ll be releasing a selection of new Cold Fusion summer holidays, bringing together the same philosophy of fantastic destinations, great activities, brilliant company and solo-friendly travel.
