One of the things that makes a Chamonix ski holiday so different from a traditional ski resort is the incredible variety of skiing available throughout the valley.
Rather than one single interconnected ski area, the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley is made up of several individual ski areas, each with its own character, terrain and snow conditions. From wide cruising pistes and tree-lined runs to steep descents, high-altitude freeride terrain and the legendary Vallée Blanche, there is somewhere to ski for almost every level.
This variety is a huge advantage. Depending on the weather, snow conditions and the ability of the group, you can choose the best ski area each day — and with Cold Fusion's local knowledge, we help our guests make the most of everything the Chamonix Valley has to offer.
Les Grands Montets – Argentière
For many experienced skiers and snowboarders, Les Grands Montets is the jewel in Chamonix's crown.
Situated above the village of Argentière, Grands Montets is famous for its high-altitude skiing, impressive vertical descents, challenging pistes and legendary freeride terrain.
This is where we often head after a big snowfall. The mountain offers a fantastic mixture of marked pistes and extensive off-piste possibilities, with spectacular views towards the Argentière Glacier.
Grands Montets particularly suits strong intermediate, advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders, although there is also terrain for less experienced skiers lower down the mountain.
If you're looking for challenging skiing, powder snow and the true big-mountain atmosphere that Chamonix is famous for, Grands Montets is difficult to beat.
Brévent – Ski Above Chamonix
Accessed directly from Chamonix town, Brévent combines fantastic skiing with some of the best views in the Alps.
The ski area sits directly opposite the Mont Blanc Massif, giving you an extraordinary panorama across to Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi and the surrounding peaks.
There is a good mixture of blue, red and black pistes, making Brévent particularly enjoyable for intermediate and advanced skiers.
Its sunny aspect also makes it a fantastic place to ski on a clear winter's day, stopping occasionally simply to take in the view.
Brévent is directly linked on skis and by lift to neighbouring Flégère, creating one of the largest linked ski areas in the Chamonix Valley.
La Flégère – Sunshine, Views & Great Cruising
Reached from the village of Les Praz or directly from Brévent, La Flégère is another Cold Fusion favourite.
Its south-facing slopes enjoy plenty of sunshine and offer breathtaking views across the Chamonix Valley towards the Mont Blanc Massif.
Flégère has a great mixture of pistes, with some excellent blues and reds for cruising as well as more challenging terrain for stronger skiers.
After fresh snow there are also some fantastic freeride possibilities for experienced skiers and snowboarders.
Combined with Brévent, it makes a superb full day's skiing with plenty of terrain to explore.
Le Tour & Domaine de Balme
At the top end of the Chamonix Valley, close to the Swiss border, you'll find Le Tour and the Domaine de Balme.
This is one of the best areas in Chamonix for intermediate skiers and snowboarders, with wide, open pistes that are perfect for building confidence, practising your turns and enjoying some relaxed cruising.
The upper slopes around Col de Balme provide wonderful open skiing and panoramic views, while crossing towards Vallorcine gives the mountain a completely different character.
It's also an excellent area for mixed-ability groups because there is plenty of terrain where everyone can enjoy the mountain at their own pace.
Vallorcine – Quiet Tree-Lined Skiing
Cross over the back of the Domaine de Balme and you arrive above the beautiful village of Vallorcine.
This side of the mountain feels very different from Le Tour, with picturesque tree-lined pistes descending towards the village.
On snowy or cloudy days, Vallorcine can be a great choice because the trees can provide better visibility than exposed high-altitude slopes.
It's often quieter than some of Chamonix's better-known ski areas and is a lovely place to spend a relaxed day exploring the mountain.
Le Tour, Balme and Vallorcine are all connected, so you can easily combine them into one full day of skiing.
Les Houches – Fantastic for All Abilities - Beginner to Advanced
Located at the entrance to the Chamonix Valley, Les Houches is one of the best ski areas in Chamonix for beginners and improving skiers, while still offering plenty of challenging terrain for more experienced skiers and snowboarders.
One of the big advantages for beginners is that you don't have to spend your first days learning to ski at the bottom of the valley.
Take the Prarion gondola to the top of the mountain and you'll find a dedicated beginner area at around 1,850 metres, with gentle nursery slopes, a moving carpet and easy lifts. This means even complete beginners can enjoy the experience of being up on the mountain from day one, surrounded by incredible panoramic views of the Mont Blanc Massif.
The altitude and orientation of the ski area also help Les Houches enjoy good snow conditions, making the upper beginner slopes a great place to learn and build confidence.
Once you've mastered the nursery slopes, Les Houches is particularly good for progression. Beginners can move onto gentle green and blue pistes and gradually explore more of the mountain without immediately having to tackle difficult terrain.
There's also the Le Tourchet beginner area down in Les Houches village, providing another convenient option for first-time skiers.
For intermediate skiers, Les Houches has some fantastic long cruising runs and beautiful tree-lined pistes. Being largely below the tree line also makes it one of our favourite Chamonix ski areas when the weather closes in and visibility is poor higher up the valley.
And Les Houches certainly isn't only for beginners. It's also home to the legendary Kandahar World Cup downhill, where some of the world's best ski racers compete.
This combination makes Les Houches an excellent choice for beginners, families and mixed-ability groups — you can learn to ski high on the mountain with fantastic views and then progress onto a much larger ski area as your confidence improves.
Beginner Ski Areas in Chamonix
Chamonix may have a reputation for extreme skiing, but you certainly don't need to be an expert to learn to ski here.
There are several dedicated beginner areas throughout the valley.
Le Savoy, at the bottom of Brévent in central Chamonix, provides gentle slopes ideal for first turns.
Les Planards, just outside Chamonix centre, is another popular learning area with easy pistes and beginner-friendly lifts.
In Les Houches, Le Tourchet provides a convenient village beginner slope, while there is also dedicated beginner terrain higher up the Les Houches ski area.
At Le Tour, La Vormaine is another excellent area for beginners and improving skiers.
Once you've developed your confidence, you can progress onto the easier pistes of Les Houches, Le Tour/Balme and the other main Chamonix ski areas.
The Vallée Blanche – Chamonix's Legendary High-Mountain Descent
No description of skiing in Chamonix would be complete without mentioning the Vallée Blanche.
Starting high above Chamonix from the Aiguille du Midi, the Vallée Blanche is one of the world's most famous high-mountain ski descents.
Surrounded by glaciers and some of the highest peaks in the Alps, it is an unforgettable experience for competent skiers and snowboarders when conditions allow.
The Vallée Blanche is not a marked or controlled ski piste and involves genuine glacial and high-mountain terrain. We therefore recommend skiing it only with a qualified high-mountain guide.

Ski a Different Area Every Day
This is what we love about skiing in Chamonix.
You aren't restricted to skiing the same network of pistes every day.
One morning we might head to Grands Montets looking for fresh snow. The next could be a sunny day cruising Brévent and Flégère, followed by tree-lined skiing in Les Houches when the weather changes.
Another day might take us up the valley to Le Tour and Vallorcine.
And for suitable skiers, there is always the possibility of experiencing the legendary Vallée Blanche with a qualified mountain guide.
It's this variety that makes Chamonix such an incredible destination for a week's ski or snowboard holiday.
