With the majestic Mont Blanc providing a back drop to this bustling alpine town, Chamonix is a real mecca during the summer months for alpine sports enthusiasts and tourists alike.  When you are not gazing at the jaw-dropping scenery, you will be spoilt for choice of things to do when on holiday in this vibrant resort.

CHAMONIX MONT BLANC

Chamonix is situated at the base of Europe’s most famous mountain Mont Blanc (4810m) in the French Alps on the borders of Italy and Switzerland and is one of Europe’s largest and liveliest alpine resorts.

Whether you are planning to hike to the top of a glacier, climb the mountains in the shadow of Mont Blanc, relax in the newly built spa or simply discover this fascinating town steeped in history, you will sure to have a memorable time in Chamonix.

Chamonix is renowned as the Birthplace of Alpinism and so if climbing mountains is your thing than there really is no better place than Chamonix!  There are many guides available to show you routes or to teach you the basics if you are a novice.  Equipment is also available to hire.

Hiking and trail running are also very popular in Chamonix.  Simply take a lift to the mid station of one of the mountains and the world is your oyster – there are hundreds of kilometers of trails to be explored on foot either by yourself or with a guide.  If you are a trail running enthusiast, then the world famous UTMB trail running event is not to be missed at the end of the summer.  Runners from all over the world take on the grueling course of approx. 171 kilometers and elevation gain of 10, 400m.  It is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world, and one of the largest with more than 2,500 starters.

If you prefer to explore Chamonix on 2 wheels, mountain biking is a great choice with 6 separate lift systems and a vertical range of over 2000 meters to be ridden. Tackle miles of classic single track and technical, steep rocky sections with big mountain scenery.  There are also plenty of gentle, valley level trails that can be enjoyed by everyone, including mini-cyclists!  Mountain bikes and electric bikes can be hired in resort and bike guides are also available to book.

For those wanting to cool down from the summer mountain heat, there are many white-water activities to be discovered, including rafting, kayaking, hydrospeed and canyoning.  There is also a large outdoor swimming pool complex in the centre of Chamonix as well as a newly built spa offering total peace and relaxation.

Famous Chamonix tourist attractions include the Aiguille du Midi – a mountain peak standing at 3842m, accessed by cable car from the centre of Chamonix and offering amazing views towards Mont Blanc and the surrounding area.  The Montenvers train is another attraction not to be missed, where passengers can enjoy a ride on the mountain cog railway up to the Mer de Glace glacier with viewing platform, ice caves and café/bar.

For the younger visitors, there are plenty of activities to be enjoyed including a high ropes park, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, beautiful parks in the forest with lakes, pony trekking, animal parks, an alpine luge and amusement park just to name a few!
