With a driving time of only 90 minutes from Geneva, Morzine is an easily accessible resort and is popular not only for week-long breaks but for short stays too.
The vibrant town of Morzine has many bars and restaurants offering a large choice of cuisine to suit all palates. There are plenty of busy bars in town with regular live music and events to be enjoyed after a day in the mountains. Numerous special events and festivals take place during the summer months and give Morzine a real party atmosphere with live music, markets and street parades and entertainment.
If a relaxing break is what you are looking for, head to Montriond lake for a swim and relax in breathtaking surroundings or enjoy an hour of stand-up paddle boarding. You could also take the lift up to one of the gentle alpine walking trails to admire the beauty of the area from above. In the centre of Morzine, you will find an indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex with saunas and hammams to unwind and relax.
For those looking for a little adventure and adrenalin, the mountain biking in this area is world-class and not to be missed and road biking enthusiasts will not be disappointed with some of the iconic road biking climbs in the area. You could also try rafting, canyoning, rock climbing or parapenting.
For the younger visitors, there is the chance to try pony trekking, play a game of tennis, have a splash at the swimming pool complexes in Morzine and Avoriaz or tackle one of the high ropes parks in the trees especially for children. There are also a numerous parks and outdoor areas where children can play and they can even take a ride on the carousel in the town centre!
Mountain Biking in Morzine
Morzine and the surrounding Portes du Soleil area have been at the forefront of alpine mountain biking for many years and is known as one of the world’s best mountain biking areas. This well connected riding area provides a perfect trip for any rider from beginner to expert. Bike parks, skill practice areas, beginner downhill tracks and literal cross country trails spanning into Switzerland and back, will guarantee you have an amazing riding experience.
This busy and vibrant town is the perfect base from which to explore one of the largest areas of maintained alpine bike trails in the Alps, as well as being the largest and most centrally located resort in the Portes du Soleil riding area.
This picturesque mountain resort offers great local riding in Morzine and the neighbouring resort of Les Gets, Linderets, Chatel but is also a gateway to the extensive Portes du Soleil boasting 650km of trails, across 12 resorts in France and Switzerland.
Morzine Ride Area
30 Lifts – 12 Bike Parks – 650KM Trails
Opening in mid-June, the lifts have specially adapted bike racks and other apparatus to ensure less faffing and more ride time in the picturesque and adventurous mountain terrain. Of course, hiking and dragging and cycling your bike up the steep inclines are more than welcome for the purist.
The purpose built 3.25km Pleney downhill course is the best known MTB trail in Morzine. This black rated run sports a gnarly vertical decent of over 550m across the duration of the course. There are however easier routes to get your teeth into alongside, with other smoother crossing-over runs down from the Pleney télécabine.
There are also highly technical runs down to the Atray gulley and more pedal powered runs such as “heart attack hill” leading riders to the Grand Pre and back into morzine valley. The Super Morzine bubble lift is a Bubble provides wide open super-fast runs with some technical sections and vertical banks to spice things up, keeping riders thoroughly entertained.
There is also 350km specifically dedicated electric mountain bike trails.
For those of you staying for the week Its more economical to buy a PDS lift pass, ensuring you can explore the magnitude of riding these resorts offer in an unlimited fashion. It however it is possible to purchase individual accents in the Morzine and Avoriaz areas from the lift offices
Les Gets MTB ride area
The Chavannes Express is six man lift that gives access to side of the valley. Boasting 90 km of slopes including 13 downhill, A freeride and 6 Cross-country trails. Which gives you access to:
La Roue Libre has 3km consistently size jumps table tops to allow you to increase your aerial proficiency, as well as high speed lines and crafted berns with alternative track lines for your warm up laps or just in case you wish to have a look. There also are also family friendly blue and green runs in close proximity, on this side of the hill. Also from this lift is access to the jump park for the dirt jumpers and flowing wooded tracks for all levels, all running alongside a beautiful lake. Across the valley The Mont Chery bubble provides access to a steep black downhill and Northshore and jumps park for experienced riders.
The Mont Caly trail has a variety of tree routes and rocky trails bringing you full circle to Mont Chery. In the village center at the Place de la Mairie there is a kid zone and pump track that can be used at any time with music, night ride sessions and free beginner sessions. There is also a coaching track in the Chavannes area where riders can work on their riding techniques in a controlled environment. With video coaching from downhill champ Fabian Barrel.
Avoriaz ride area
With a wide variety of downhill with jumps and drops, roots and rocks for all riders, with a pump track at the center of resort. This car free ski town is a blissful addition to the PDS area. The tour chairlift and Lindarets Express chairlift. gives you access to multiple trails to perfect your riding. From curvy banked blue runs, through to technical Blacks used the French national series.
From Avoriaz you can ride down to the Mossettes lift accessing the Swiss side of PDS (Les Crosets, Champery, Morgins).
Morgins: This all downhill area is great for the intermediate to advanced riders multiple fast lines with plenty of features, fire roads, and ski pistes.
Champery: This area can be accessed from Les Crosets from a multitude of routes. What it makes up in steepness more than makes up for in technicality and secret trails all of varying difficulty.
Les Crosets: gives riders the option of two downhill tracks. Firstly crosets a Blue Freeride/All Mountain style bike track taking you to Champery and Grande Conche a steep Black downhill run.
