Summer in Morzine

If you like Morzine in winter, then you’ll love it in summer! It’s the same town but seems so different; bright flower displays spilling from every balcony, green pastures all round, colourful parapentes up in the azure sky, the tinkling of Alpine cow bells amongst the wild flowers up on the slopes. There’s such a variety of activities and sports to try, ranging from the increasingly popular mountain biking and hiking to golf, parapenting, tennis, adventure parks, white water rafting and via ferrata. Many of these activities are suitable for families with children, which means that you can have an active and interesting summer holiday, keeping everyone happy! See below for a full list of summer sports.

25 Portes du Soleil ski lifts are open in the summer (click here for a summer map) enabling you to get up high for spectacular walking or mountain biking – in fact the whole Portes du Soleil circuit can be covered in a day on mountain bikes once you get up to intermediate level.

The summer has a much more laid-back feel; town bars and restaurants have sunny terraces spilling out onto the pavements, people have the time for a refreshing glass or rosé or beer in the warm summer evenings, BBQ scents fill the air, and the whole valley opens up to be discovered – there are wonderful mountain restaurants to try in places that you’ve never been to before!

Our summer programme reflects this laid-back feeling; our self-catered chalets and apartments are available for short stays, long weekends and non-standard change over days. Just contact us with your requirements and we’ll see what we can do. Prices are much lower in the summer than the winter so it’s totally possible to have a family or group holiday at reasonable cost.

Mountain Biking Holidays
About Mountain Biking in Morzine
For information on individual itineraries and bike parks, see our mountain biking routes.
Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz, & the whole Portes du Soleil (PDS) area is a mecca for mountain bikers the world over, with thousands of kilometres of down hill and cross contry trails, an extenisive lift system, bike park areas and beautiful mountain scenery to top it off.
Depending on how much lift access you prefer, you’ll want to take a look at our summer lift pass prices page, where you can guage how much a full area PDS pass is, or just individual passes in Morzine or Avoriaz.
And to get a grip on the scale of the area check out these maps for the Portes du Soleil, Morzine & Les Gets and Avoriaz.
Don’t forget that summer in the Alps is very hot, so as well as all your biking clobber pack plenty of sun screen! And if you don’t have all the gear, you can rent it all when you get here either through your accommodation provider or through local sports shops or mountain bike guides.
Lift Access for Mountain Bikes
The lifts are open from mid June until mid September and have specifically adapted racks or hooks for your bikes allowing you spend more of your time riding incredible alpine terrain rather dragging yourself up steep inclines (unless that’s what you like!)
Lift passes can be bought at the lift stations on an individual ascent basis. However if you’re here for a few days and are going up and down many times during your stay, it’s more economical to purchase a Portes du Soleil lift pass which gives you unlimited access to the whole PDS area. You have the option of buying consecutive or non consecutive passes.
Biking routes
The area has been at the forefront of Alpine mountain biking for a considerable number of years and as such has a highly developed network of trails. There is literally something for everyone to enjoy, from family riding, beginniner downhill tracks, north shore tracks, skills practise areas, bike parks and a diverse mix of cross country loops spanning from France into Switzerland and back.
Morzine and the Portes du Soleil has more bike parks and therefore maintained and graded trails than many other alpine resorts; for example Les Gets (Chavannes/Nauchets area), Linderets (express linderets) Chatel (Plaine Dranse) and Les Crosets / Champery although these two areas particularly difficult and should only be tackled by expert level riders.

The circuit in Parc Dérèches is perfect for young children, taking you around the park with bridges criss-crossing the River Dranse. There is a beautiful lakeside walk around Lac Montriond which you can extend with a little climbing to the spectacular Ardent waterfall. Another trail starting in the heart of Morzine takes you along the river and through the woods to the stunning Nyon waterfall. Using the Pleney cable car gets you right up into the mountains, and numerous walks including one all the way to neighbouring Les Gets across the 18 hole golf course. For stunning views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding French Alps, the walk from Mont Chery to Mont Caly is not to be missed.

Medium walks in the local French Alps

Alpine walks such as the hike to the Col de Cou or Col de Bretolet, following the path used by the French Resistance during World War II to cross into Switzerland, prove to be firm favourites for any walking holiday in the French Alps. Other popular walks close to Morzine include a section of the famous GR5 traverse of the French Alps en route to the picturesque village of Samoëns, or making your way to Chatel with the aide of chairlifts to reach the amazing Fantasticable zip wire which crosses a steep alpine valley.  As with all walks, alpine restaurants provide much needed rest and refreshments along the way.

Difficult alpine walking and treking

There are plenty of trails to challenge serious hikers looking to trek high into the French Alps for stunning mountain scenery.  The long ridge ascent in the Dents Blanches offers great scrambling with stunning alpine views of the magnificent Mont Blanc. The classic Roc d’Enfer, a dramatic ridge route with chains for support on some scrambling sections, rewards your walking efforts with breathtaking views. There are also the famous three peaks dominating the scenery in Morzine: Ressachaux, Nyon and Nantaux. Each challenging “vertical kilometre” hike gives you amazing views of the Portes du Soleil and the surrounding Alps. These trails are demanding for even the most experienced walkers, offering a true sense of achievement in conquering even one. Hiring a local French mountain guide is a safe and enjoyable way to enjoy all of the more extreme routes on offer for walking in Morzine and the neighbouring French Alps.
